Why Choose St. Stephen's Episcopal School?

Although the first students walked through the doors of St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in 1978, our mission, purpose, and focus remains steadfast and true. We are here to not only provide a superior education to our students, but to assist in the cultivation of lifelong, thoughtful learners, and healthy, productive community members.

Our Location

Located in downtown Harrisburg, St. Stephen’s rests on the banks of the Susquehanna and in the shadow of the Capitol building.  We are in walking distance of countless cultural, natural,  historical, and educational resources. Our students routinely walk to theaters, museums, libraries, and state government buildings to participate in the real life of our city and region.

Our Diversity

SSES benefits from a student body and family community that is diverse in terms of race, culture, language, socio-economics, faith, gender, and sexual identity.  Our Episcopal Identity leads us to welcome families of all faith traditions, or no faith tradition. We are proud of our diverse community that mirrors the population of the Greater Harrisburg Area. Our diversity is our strength!

Our Community

With a 1:7 staff to student ratio, every young person gets individualized attention at SSES. Small class sizes mean that faculty can tailor their instruction to the interests and needs of each student. Our teachers are highly qualified and nurture students by providing them the best academic experience possible.  In addition to the core courses, students participate in Spanish, Art, Financial Literacy, Technology, Gym, Religion, Music, and Environmental Education classes. Our loving community includes support from devoted volunteers, our active Home & School Association,  and the St. Stephen’s Cathedral and its parishioners.

Learning With a Purpose

Our academic approach is experiential, student-centered, and project-based. We are creating the leaders of tomorrow, who make valuable contributions to their communities from the youngest ages. At St. Stephen’s students are learning to think critically, speak clearly, and act boldly.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal School is a member of the National Association of Episcopal Schools and is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Elementary Schools.
